Automobile AccidentsAutomobile accidents are unexpected. Most of us think it will happen to the other guy, but never to ourselves. Unfortunately, with the ever increasing volume of traffic and congestion on our roads, most of us will be involved in an auto accident, or know someone who has.
If you or a family member are involved in an auto accident, here are some tips to remember:
* If you or someone else involved in the accident needs medical assistance, seek help immediately. Contact the police.
* Regardless if anyone is injured, it is best to contact the police. If you choose not to do so you may be compromising your own interests.
* With regard to any motor vehicle accident, all operators have a duty to stop their vehicles and exchange the appropriate information, such as driver's license
information, auto registration, and insurance information.
* Always cooperate with the police and emergency personnel.
* If you are in pain, even if it is minor, advise the police and emergency personnel.
* Write down the license plate number of all vehicles involved in the accident.
* Write down the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all potential witnesses.
* Contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
* Take photographs of your automobile and the scene of the accident as soon as possible after the accident.
* Take photos of your injuries.
* Contact your attorney as soon as poossible.
* Do not leave the scene of the accident until the police tell you it is okay to do so.
* Do not engage in discussions as to fault with anyone.
* Do not apologize for anything, it could be used against you later on.
*Do not give a statement to any other driver's insurance company until you consult with an attorney.
* Do not agree to settle any claim you may have without contacting an attorney.
* Do not get treatment for your injuries without notifying your insurance company.
The foregoing represents just a few tips if you are involved in an automobile accident.
While each situation is different, always remember that you have certain rights that need to be protected.
